Parent & Caregiver Training

Your home is where most of your child's learning actually happens โ€” not just during formal ABA sessions, but throughout everyday life. A few thoughtful adjustments to your home environment can make a real difference in how easily your child learns and regulates.

Reducing Unnecessary Sensory Load

Consider your home's baseline sensory environment: lighting (natural or soft lighting is often easier to tolerate than harsh fluorescent light), background noise (TVs or music running constantly in the background can add to sensory load even when not the direct focus), and clutter or visual busyness, which can be genuinely overwhelming for some children even in spaces meant to feel comfortable.

Creating a Calm-Down Space

Having a designated, predictable space where your child can go to decompress โ€” even a small corner with a few comfort items โ€” gives them somewhere to self-regulate before reaching full overwhelm. This isn't a punishment space; it should be associated with calm and safety, something your child chooses to use, not something used as a consequence.

Predictability and Visual Structure

Many autistic children benefit significantly from visual supports that make expectations concrete: visual schedules showing the sequence of the day, labeled storage for toys and belongings so expectations are clear, and consistent physical organization so your child knows where things belong and what to expect.

Minimizing Competing Distractions During Learning Moments

When you're working on a specific skill or your child's RBT is conducting a session, reducing competing distractions (turning off background TV, minimizing foot traffic through the space) can meaningfully improve your child's ability to focus and engage.

Balancing Structure With Real Life

It's worth being realistic: your home doesn't need to become a clinical environment, and over-engineering every space can be exhausting and unnecessary. The goal is a reasonably predictable, not-overwhelming baseline โ€” not eliminating all sensory input or spontaneity from your family's life.

Involving Your Child in Setup, When Possible

For children who can participate, involving them in organizing their own space (choosing where things go, picking calm-down space items) can increase both buy-in and their sense of control over their environment.

Getting Specific Guidance for Your Child

Every child's sensory profile and environmental needs are different โ€” what helps one child regulate might not work for another. This is exactly the kind of individualized guidance your BCBA should offer as part of parent training, based on your specific child's assessed sensory needs. We cover sensory processing more broadly in our Sensory Processing & Regulation content.
