Choosing an ABA Provider

If you've started researching ABA therapy in Michigan, you've likely already encountered the word "waitlist" more than once. It can feel discouraging after already waiting for a diagnosis โ€” but understanding why waitlists exist can make them easier to navigate.

Why Waitlists Are So Common

Demand for ABA therapy has grown significantly faster than the supply of licensed BCBAs and trained RBTs, particularly in Michigan since the state's autism insurance mandate expanded access to coverage. Quality providers intentionally limit how many children a single BCBA supervises to maintain real clinical oversight โ€” which is a good thing for care quality, but it does mean capacity doesn't scale infinitely. Rural and smaller Michigan communities often face longer waits than metro areas simply because fewer providers operate there at all.

What Affects How Long You'll Wait

A few factors commonly influence wait time: your specific geographic location (some parts of Michigan have more provider density than others), the provider's current caseload and staffing, whether your child's insurance requires specific authorization steps before services can begin, and how quickly your own paperwork and evaluation documentation come together.

What You Can Do While Waiting

Waiting doesn't have to mean doing nothing. While you wait for services to start, it's worth:

Questions Worth Asking About a Waitlist

When a provider tells you there's a wait, it's fair to ask: roughly how long is the current wait, realistically? Will insurance verification happen while I'm waiting, so we're ready to start immediately once a spot opens? Is there anything I can do now to prepare? A provider who can answer these clearly is generally being upfront with you about their actual capacity.

Our Approach to Waitlists

We're honest with Muskegon-area families and others across our service area about current capacity rather than promising an unrealistic start date. We begin insurance verification as soon as you Get Started Today, so there's no wasted time once a spot becomes available, and our BCBA, Kimberly Blazer, personally reviews new cases as capacity opens.

Our Individual ABA Therapy service is designed around exactly this kind of goal. Our in-home ABA therapy in Muskegon page has more on our current process, or Get Started Today to get the process started, even if service won't begin immediately.
